Porcelain Inlays and Onlays
Porcelain inlays and onlays are small, custom-made, tooth-coloured ceramic fillings that fit into damaged teeth.

What are inlays and onlays?
An inlay or onlay is a custom-made insert shaped to fit inside a prepared tooth. It is bonded in place to prevent further decay and stabilise the surrounding tooth structure.
A composite filling is made of a putty-like resin placed in a simple cavity and hardened with a special light; it is a direct restoration completed in one visit. Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations: they are made by a dental laboratory and ceramist and placed at a second visit.
Who are they for?
They are usually placed in larger cavities and areas with less remaining tooth structure, as an alternative to a crown.
- Strengthen the remaining tooth structure
- Can be coloured to match the existing tooth
- Stain and wear resistant, polished surface
- Help prevent secondary decay
How does the process work?
The tooth is prepared and an impression is taken. The inlay or onlay is made in the laboratory and bonded to the tooth at the second visit.
How many sessions?
Two sessions.
